Rio Tinto in Mongolia
Located in south Gobi region of Mongolia, Oyu Tolgoi is a world-class copper and gold mining project that is being developed in conjunction with Turquoise Hill Resources (formerly Ivanhoe Mines) and the Government of Mongolia. Rio Tinto’s investment in Oyu Tolgoi is consistent with its strategy of focusing on large, long-term and cost competitive mines and businesses. Oyu Tolgoi will complement our investment in other world-class copper assets in Escondido (Chile), Grasberg (Indonesia) and Kennecott Utah Copper (US). Oyu Tolgoi will be a core pillar in our undeveloped copper assets along with La Granja (Peru) and Resolution Copper (US).

Rio Tinto is committed to sustainable development in all of our greenfield projects like Oyu Tolgoi. We believe this, coupled with our technological expertise in innovative copper mining processes, makes us the ideal partner to work alongside Turquoise Hill Resources (formerly Ivanhoe Mines) and the Government of Mongolia in bringing Oyu Tolgoi into production and yielding long-term economic benefit to the citizens of Mongolia. In July 2013, the first shipments of copper concentrates left Oyu Tolgoi destined for customers in China. Completed in record time, the concentrator is Mongolia’s largest and most technologically-advanced machine. Oyu Tolgoi is now focusing on completing its transition to a safe, sustainable and profitable operating business, delivering value for all shareholders.
